Unter der Annahme, dass Filme im Stande sind, andere Medien zu reflektieren und dies auch häufig tun, beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit mit der Fotografie in Christopher Nolans Spielfilm "Memento". Sie geht dabei der Frage nach, wie die Fotografie eingesetzt wird, warum sie so eingesetzt wird und was der Film reflektiv über das Medium Fotografie aussagt.
Der Film ist ein Medium des Beobachtens und der Reflexion. Diese These gilt für Kirchmann und Ruchatz als die wichtigste Errungenschaft in der Filmtheorie der letzten 30 Jahre. Besonderen Ehrgeiz zeigt der Film für die Reflexion der Fotografie, wie zahlreiche Publikationen zeigen. "Blow Up" (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966), "Eyes of Laura Mars" (Irvin Kershner, 1978 ), "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (Jim Gillespie, 1997 ) oder "Rear Window" (Alfred Hitchcock, 1954) sind nur einige Beispiele von Filmen, die Medienreflexion über die Fotografie betreiben.
