Excerpt from the Book

The ‘Panorama’ Cover : method, introduction, analysis and survey results.

The method used was qualitative in the analysis of the cover and quantative in the survey of responses. The focus of the study is on the content and structure of a magazine cover and the consequences of these on a small sample of its of reader-audience. This audience and the cover are nationally specific to Italy, in the context of their temporal, spatial, cultural and social condition. As such their specificity plays a parallel role in the communication process. The only criteria used in the selection of the sample of a reader-audience of 40 participants was that they should be Italian nationals, resident in Italy and of, or over, the voting age of 18. Otherwise the selection was entirely random and resulted in a nearly equal mix of gender, age , and education ranges. Their responses to certain elements of the content and structure and to broader issues relating to political information were surveyed via a 10 point questionnaire of graded response choices. This method of data collection was quick to carry out and not demanding or intrusive of the participants. For the analysis of the magazine cover, this work draws to a large extent on Corner’s (1998) evaluations and guidance on media theory and concepts and on Hawkes (1977) for his examples on the use of the theories of Semiotics and Structuralism which, although developed within the field of literary criticism, here were considered useful in deconstructing the cover photo and accompanying text. An examination of the content and form of the cover follows together with the results of the survey and a discussion of same.
