In the following paper, the origin and development of multi-perspective casework will be described. Subsequently, the term will be defined more precisely and distinguished from other methods of social work. In the further course, the dimensions and the phases of case work will be presented. In order to make these more understandable, a case example follows, with which the individual phases and dimensions are clarified. After a brief critique, this paper ends with a final conclusion with an assessment of the effectiveness of this method.

Objectives and Topics

The paper aims to introduce and analyze Burkhard Müller's model of "multi-perspective casework," examining how it structures the complexity of social pedagogical action. It explores the core dimensions and developmental phases of this methodology to provide a framework for professional social work practice that remains both theoretically sound and pragmatically manageable.

  • Theoretical foundation of multi-perspective casework
  • Distinction between "case of," "case for," and "case with" dimensions
  • Sequential phases: Anamnesis, diagnosis, intervention, and evaluation
  • Application of the model through practical case examples
  • Reflective practice and the role of the social pedagogue

Excerpt from the Book

2.3.1 Case of

This dimension addresses a level that creates a character of "administrative action" in social pedagogical action. After all, social work is an activity that is predominantly integrated into bureaucratic structures. However, the ‘case of’ dimension is not limited to legal aspects, but also includes socio-educational expertise. Case of should mean that the case is considered “an example of a recognized general”, for example a theory or a norm. In social work, such a case could be, for example, a case of child welfare endangerment that develops into a case of taking into care and would thus require action under administrative law. In this case, it is a matter of translating a generally valid law or undefined legal concepts into concrete action - in relation to the individual case. Therefore, it is also not sufficient to merely apply the legal provisions correctly.

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction: Presents the concept of multi-perspective casework and outlines the paper's goal to define and operationalize this social work model.

2. Multi-perspective casework: Discusses the origins, definitions, and core dimensions of the model, alongside the specific phases of the helping process.

3. Case study: Illustrates the theoretical components of the model using an invented practical example to demonstrate how the phases and dimensions interact.

4. Review: Reflects on the effectiveness and limitations of the multi-perspective casework approach as an instrument for analytical structure in social work.

5. Conclusion: Summarizes how the model provides a reflective, manageable framework for practitioners to conduct planned and reasoned social pedagogical work.

What are the primary themes discussed?

It covers the definition of casework, the three main observation dimensions (case of, case for, case with), the four phases of the help process, and the importance of reflection in professional practice.

What is the primary goal of the methodology described?

The goal is to move beyond simple, prescriptive tasks and provide a self-reflective, flexible instrument that helps social pedagogues organize and understand complex client situations.

Which scientific methodology is emphasized?

The paper emphasizes a reconstructive, multidimensional approach that balances theoretical knowledge with practical situational management rather than following rigid, bureaucratic schemes.

What does the main body cover?

The main body breaks down the dimensions of case observation, details each of the four phases of the helping process, and provides a case study to demonstrate how these elements apply to real-world situations.

Which keywords define this work?

Key terms include multi-perspective casework, social pedagogical action, anamnesis, diagnosis, intervention, and professional reflection.

What does the "Case of" dimension entail?
