Proverbs: A cursory look
Proverbs are concrete, and brief sayings that express conventional truth normally deployed as a strategy for dealing with situations. Such expressions are generally short and are expressed in words that are simple, entertaining and easy to remember. That being said, the definition of proverbs shall be approached from purview of different paremiologists. Firstly, Norrick (73) sees proverb as wisdom of many and the wit of one. Simply put, it is the experience and wisdom of several ages gathered and summed up in one expression”. This definition points to the fact that the written heritage of a people is kept and hidden in proverbs. This explains why the Yoruba people describe proverb as the horse that can carry one swiftly to the discovery of ideas while the Igbo people describe proverbs as mmanụ e ji eri okwu (the palm oil with which words are eaten).

This simply points to the fact that proverbs are tradition since it is handed down from one generation to another. Even more, Obadan (4), holds the view that proverbs are the basis by which words or conversations are made.” She goes further to say that in Africa especially in Nigerian context, expressions are not considered rich and intelligent except they are duly laced with proverbs which are many in our diversified cultures. Thus, one can actually gain insight into a particular culture through the proverbs of that society. From the above, it can be seen that both definitions agree that wisdom and tradition are the major aspect that proverbs attempt to reflect hence, its meaning is influenced by the culture of the people. In the words of Yankah (328) a proverb is a tool used
