This investigation will explore the question: To what extent did the Boston Tea Party influence the American Revolution? The events leading up to and following the Boston Tea Party, especially the year 1773, will be the focus of the investigation, as they, on the one hand, provide an explanation for the Colonist's actions and, on the other hand, illustrate the effect of the Boston Tea Party, therefore playing a pivotal role in answering my research question.

As I have been to Boston many times, and witnessed the revival of the Tea Party, I was curious to fully understand its importance and impact on the American cause.

Excerpt from the Book

Events leading to the Boston Tea Party:

When looking at the events leading up to the Boston Tea Party, the slogan "No taxation without representation" (London Magazine, 1768) appears as taxes on the Colonist's beloved Tea and other goods were issued, which were called "Townshend Acts" (Townshend Acts, Wikipedia). The Colonists, not being represented in the parliament, considered these taxes unconstitutional, consequently evading them by boycotting British Tea whilst smuggling in cheaper Tea. To put this boycott into perspective, in the 1760s, "Americans were consuming about one million pounds of Tea every year" (The Boston Tea Party – Robert J. Allison). This left the British, who were heavily in debt after winning the Seven Year war against France (The Boston Tea Party, Robert J. Allison), with an enormous budgetary deficit; as summa summarum, their profit from selling the Tea, including Taxes, drastically decreased.

This is evident as smuggled tea accounted for "three quarters" of the overall consumption (The story of the Boston Tea Party, Ben Labaree). At this time, smuggling formed a highly lucrative business, especially for Samuel Adams, who is renowned for being the ring leader of the Boston Tea Party. In order to ensure financial stability, Britain decided to recall the "Townshend Act" on all goods, except for Tea. This resulted in the resolution of the widespread protests by the Colonists. In order for their Tea to be competitive with the smuggled one, they implemented the "Tea Act", starting in 1773, selling it through "handpicked consignees in America" (The story behind the Boston Tea Party – Ben Labaree) and granted "a monopoly on all tea exported to the colonies" (Boston Tea Party, Britannica). The successful Tea Act resulted in British Tea being cheaper than the smuggled. Accordingly, the businesses of the Smugglers were now at stake, threatening their very own economic interests.
