Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was one of the most important female authors in the transitional period from Victorian age to the Edwardian age. Until her death at the age of 59 she published several novels, feminist essays and held two classes in Cambridge about “Women and Fiction”.
In this term paper I would like to introduce the feminism aspects of her life and novels, and give an over-view of the essays she wrote.
After giving a short introduction with the most important facts about Virginia Woolf’s life, my first intention is to define the theory of feminism and show how it affected Virginia already as a young girl and mainly as an independent woman.
Later, three of her novels are taken to demonstrate how Virginia Woolf’s development influenced her literary output. I would also like to show the differences between Virginia Woolf’s attitude towards women and men and compare it to theories of the feministic movement in the 20th century.
This will be followed by a summary and conclusion, and a Bibliography, which only shows the most relevant books published for this subject, for there are numerous biographies and essays written on Virginia Woolf’s life.

Diese Arbeit untersucht die feministischen Aspekte im Leben und literarischen Werk von Virginia Woolf. Das Hauptziel besteht darin, die Entwicklung ihres feministischen Bewusstseins aufzuzeigen, ihre Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Strukturen zu beleuchten und ihre spezifische Haltung zu Frauenrechten von den radikaleren Strömungen der Frauenbewegung des 20. Jahrhunderts abzugrenzen.

4.1 “Mrs Dalloway”
Virginia Woolf wrote “Mrs Dalloway” from 1922-1924, basing on the short story “Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street” It was published in 1925. The plot takes place in London, only lasts one day and “the passing of time is marked by the booming of the hours by Big Ben”; for the novel was supposed to be called “The Hours” first, but Virginia did not want the figures in the novel just to be imaginary. That is also why she uses the “stream of consciousness” as a main stylistic device to give the figures a real character.
The reader is able to ‘read’ the thoughts of the main characters and to get to know what they think about one another, which gives the reader the impression to “know[s] them intimately”.
The novel talks about Mrs Dalloway going to town to make preparation for her party such as buying flowers, how the other main characters spend the same day, and how they finally meet each other at the party itself later on.
There are various connections between the character of Septimus, an ex-soldier, and Virginia herself which is shown in many different details throughout the story: She talks about Septimus as not being well-educated, referring to her for being excluded of the university and higher education as her brothers were able to receive it.
