Excerpt from the Book
1. Explore the importance and impact of non-verbal communication in the Chinese culture with reference to expert communication models and cultural value systems.
The definition of the word culture is very difficult to choose because everybody has their own one. Culture is always a matter of interpretation, which means what norms and values are settled in their mind and it develops on and on, through the whole life the culture of an individual is changing or developing. „Culture can be defined as all the ways of life including arts, beliefs and institutions of a population that are passed down from generation to generation. Culture has been called "the way of life for an entire society." As such, it includes codes of manners, dress, language, religion, rituals, art.“(Boston University, 2016). The basis are the values they creating, the foundation of a culture and determine what is considered as a good behaviour or what is a bad behaviour.
In addition, the choice of words, the physical expressions and reaction on things are defining culture as well. These things mentioned, have the power to change the meaning of communication a lot. Thats why non-verbal communication is so important to consider. „There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that non-verbal communication is purely universal like a frown, smile or anger, since these are all reflexes of our emotions. But most of the signs of non verbal communication differ from one culture to the other and so it’s not possible on somebody’s part to interpret it universally.“(IJMER, 2020). Like this research says, non verbal communication is never the same in different countries, the equal applies to the verbal communication. That says that there is a risk that during a conversation with people from other counties, that things are getting misunderstood or misinterpreted.
