3. Power, Influence, Politics, and Culture in Shaping Specific Leader Behaviors

Power, influence, politics, and culture have a significant role to play in how a leader in a certain capacity behaves. For instance, in the case study of the Blue Sky Aerospace Company, it is evident that certain departmental leaders let power get to them and this shaped their interactions with others at the organization. Diana Sinclair is a perfect example of a leader letting power, influence, and politics shape their decision-making at the company. Diana was well aware of her astuteness in dealing with financial and corporate matters, and since she was well connected within the industry knew that she was almost indispensable. Therefore, she used her power and influence in almost becoming an authoritative leader, dismissing the opinions of junior staff such as Alison.

The same can be said of David Silverman who was personally appointed by Harris to head the Central Services Division. Though he was highly effective in his position, he portrayed an aura of invincibility because he felt that Harris trusted that much to leave critical business operations under him. With this aura of power within the company, it was hard for others to question his decisions or opinions. This, therefore, set Silverman on the path to becoming an authoritative leader, who believed that his ways were not to be questioned and that junior staff working for him could not raise any concerns.
