Excerpt from the Book
Statement of the problem
In Ghana, there is a rapid growth in sports betting among the youth due to their love for lottery and European games (Tagoe, Yendork, and Asante, 2018). Studies has shown that sports betting is a normal activity just for earning money and also for socialization among the youth (Glozah, Tolchard, and Pevalin, 2019). This behavior mostly results in poor job performance at the work place and also the loss of job (Tagoe et al, 2018). In the quest to minimize the consequences of sports betting among the youth, the gaming Act 721 (48) restrict children below the legal age (18 years) from practicing betting activities or gambling. But what do we see and hear? Children of school going age are spotted in their uniforms at gaming and betting centers staking various bets. In fact, this possess great danger to the country’s future. Although sports betting has positive impact on our economy by providing employment and revenue, this positive impact is outweighed by many negative influences which makes sports betting a problem in our society (Sewor, 2019). According to (Jackson, 2019), sports betting influences the social, family, educational and the wellbeing of the youth.
