This study is aimed at determining the relationship between the big five personality factors and sports betting among young adults in Accra, Ghana. The study is also aimed at determining the relationship between the gender differences on sports betting in Accra, Ghana and finally to determine the influence of religion on sports betting among young adults in Accra, Ghana. The study was a quantitative study which involved 190 participants from Accra, Ghana. The instrument used in the study includes a Mini IPIP FFM Personality scale and a Gambling Brief Questionnaire.
Findings from the study indicated that, personality types extraversion, neuroticism and openness to experience had a significant positive relationship with sports betting. Agreeableness and conscientiousness had a negative relationship with sports betting. Moreover, the findings from the study showed that males are more likely to engage in sports betting as compare to females. Also, the findings showed that religion has a moderate relationship between sports betting and personality types agreeableness and neuroticism. Such findings call for the need to intervene in sports betting engagements to ensure that issues pertaining to sports betting are tackled drastically to avoid the incidence of problematic gambling.
