The rapid process of urbanization in developing countries accompanied by a lack of adequate and affordable housing provision is one of the 21st century's main development challenges. By 2025, nearly half of the expanded population will live in cities as a result of sustained urbanization, putting pressure on the formal housing provision. In the Oromia region of Ethiopia, particularly in Burayu sub-city, owning a house is considered a significant achievement. However, there are various challenges faced by residents during construction, including inadequate quality control of materials, lack of technical expertise, and inadequate supervision of construction sites. These challenges have led to the construction of unsafe and sub-standard buildings, leading to loss of lives and property.

The research seeks to identify the challenges facing residents during the construction of their homes in the Burayu subcity of Ethiopia. The research therefore focuses on these specific questions: What are the challenges faced by residents during the construction of their own homes in the Burayu sub-city of Ethiopia? How do these challenges affect the safety and quality of buildings constructed in the region and what policy directions can be put forward to address these challenges?

Excerpt from the Book

Defination: -Constructing one's own house can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience, but comes with its own set of challenges. In the case of constructing a house in Burayu sub-city of Oromia Regional State in Ethiopia, the owner faced several difficulties. Constructing a house involves various stages such as obtaining land ownership, securing financing, designing the house, obtaining permits, procuring construction materials and equipment, hiring skilled labor and contractors, and overseeing the construction process. The owner faced challenges in each of these stages. Ethiopian Construction Works Corporation. (2018).Securing land ownership involved navigating complex legal procedures and dealing with bureaucratic hurdles. Securing financing involved convincing lenders that the project was viable and that the owner was capable of repaying the loan.

Designing the house required the owner to choose a suitable design that met their specifications and budget. Obtaining permits required the owner to comply with building regulations, obtain necessary approvals from government authorities, and pay associated fees. Asfaw, D. (2016). Procuring construction materials and equipment involved navigating a fragmented and unreliable market. Hiring skilled labor and contractors required the owner to locate and vet potential hires, negotiate contracts, and oversee their work. Overseeing the construction process required the owner to be present, check the quality of work, and deal with any issues that arose. Despite these challenges, the owner was able to successfully complete the house construction project by seeking assistance from experienced professionals and government officials. Ayalew, D. (2015).
