Excerpt from the Book
Imagery
This refers to the elements of any literary work of art that appeal to the senses of the reader. About seven kinds of imagery are identified in literature: auditory (those that relate to the sense of hearing); those that relate to sight or seeing; olfactory, relating to the sense of smell; gustatory which relates to the sense of taste; tactile, relating to the sense of touch; kinesthetics, relating to movement and organic which concerns itself with sensations like fear or hunger (Miller, 2003; Rosenblatt, 1968). Yeats makes good use of a number of imageries in that poem. For instance, in the ninth line “And bending down beside the glowing bars” appeals to the sense of sight (visual). The image of “nodding by the fire” causes the readers to grasp the reality of the effects of aging, and to realize that they too will be old one day and unable to stay awake and appeals to our sense of movement (kinesthetics).
