2. The Triple Bottom Line (TLB)

The Triple Bottom Line (known as the TBL, 3Ps or 3BL) was developed in 1994 by entrepreneur and business journalist John Elkington (Kenton, 2022) and is a relatively new measure of corporate performance. The basic idea was that companies should consider environmental and social issues as much as their profits. This is because if companies only consider their profits, companies are not taking into account the full impacts and costs of their operations (Kenton, 2022). Elkington therefore suggests that there should be a total of three baselines or dimensions that a company should follow in order to be healthy and successful: Profit, People and the Planet, also called the 3P's, as shown in Figure 1 (Norman and MacDonald, 2004; (Kenton, 2022). The dimension "People" measures the impact a company has on its stakeholders, e.g. on its employees, customers or suppliers. The “Planet” dimension measures how environmentally conscious a company is, i.e. what impact a company has on its natural environment (e.g. the use of natural resources, toxic materials, etc.). The last dimension, “Profit”, is the traditional measure of corporate performance and deals with all the economic impacts an organization has (e.g. creating jobs, or fostering innovation). Impacts can always be seen as positive and negative in the context of all three dimensions (Kraaijenbrink, 2019, Kenton, 2022).
