Discussion – responsible tourism in practice
As described in the introduction, pressure from different groups (e.g. authorities, stakeholder, tourists) to transform the tourism sector to a more sustainable and responsible sector is increasing. On basis of the given literature, it will be discussed how tourism businesses can adhere to the previously described guiding principles of environmental responsibility.
For businesses which are active in the tourism branch, it is extremely important to look at the entire value chain to get the best out of the concept of responsible tourism. Each process needs to be reconsidered.
As every business offers a specific product or service, measures are always very individual. The 2002 Cape Town Declaration and its guidelines provide a solid foundation on which to base decisions and measures. From this, various options can be derived that companies can consider providing an offer which is more responsible concerning the environment.
