This internship report contains the working experience of the author, who spent some time learning the practical trade of tanning leather at the Hausa Zongo Tannery Centre in Tamale, Ghana.
As a nation, we have made very little progress in our attempt to develop over the years. For any meaningful social and economic advancement in the environment in which we find ourselves, it was realised that there is the need to increase and improve the country's middle level manpower. The implementation of Bachelor of Technology courses in the county was aimed at raising the working force of the middle level manpower both in quality and quantity. In view of this, every student pursuing the course is to undertake some practical training in the field of study. This helps the students acquire skills, knowledge and curret technological development in our various industries and leads to the appreciation of some phases of their course outside the lecture halls.
This report is divided into chapters, it begins with orientation and followed by description of job offered and problems encountered before and during the period of the attachment. In the final analysis the experience I acquired in undertaking the attachment are summarised.

Objectives and Topics of the Report
This report documents the industrial attachment experience of an Art and Design Innovation student, focusing on the practical application of leather tanning and processing techniques within a professional environment to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world industrial practices.
- Historical evolution of the leather tanning industry in Ghana.
- Technical sequence of leather processing, from skinning to pickling.
- Safety protocols and operational standards essential in a tannery environment.
- Integration of graphic design skills into traditional leather working processes.
- Analysis of challenges encountered during industrial training and the resulting skill acquisition.
Excerpt from the Book
iv. Liming
After soaking, the hides and skins are taken for liming: treatment with milk of lime (a basic agent) that may involve the addition of "sharpening agents" (disulfide reducing agents) such as sodium sulfide, cyanides, amines, etc. The objectives of this operation are mainly to:
Remove the hairs, and other keratinous matter
Remove some of the interfibrillary soluble proteins such as mucins
Swell up and split up the fibres to the desired extent
Remove the natural grease and fats to some extent
Summary of Chapters
CHAPTER ONE: Provides an overview of the historical background of the leather tanning industry in Ghana and defines the corporate mission and safety policies of the Hausa Zongo Tannery Center.
CHAPTER TWO: Details the technical workflow of the tannery, categorizing the specific industrial processes such as skinning, curing, soaking, liming, and pickling.
CHAPTER THREE: Highlights the practical contributions made by students during the attachment and reflects on the new technical skills and challenges encountered during the training period.
CHAPTER FOUR: Offers general observations and commentary on the effectiveness of the industrial attachment program, providing recommendations for future improvements by both the academic institution and the industry.
