The author discusses deeply of the discrimination she and her brother suffered an European school where they were studying when the British still ruled India she relates an event in which a poem she wrote was decided to a visitor at the school and credit was given to a Scottish girl. “When the visitors come , the brown children were always discreetly hidden away, swept under the carpet, told to wait in the corridor behind the lavatories where the school ayahs kept them company” (Kamala Das, p-3), she says.
