The link between e-cigarette smoking and mental health disorders youth in the United among States (US) is a topic of concern. The purpose of this case study is to examine the relationship between the initiation of cigarette smoking, combustible cigarette, and dual-product use among US youth. The study aims to estimate the longitudinal association between noncigarette tobacco use and subsequent cigarette smoke initiation among youth.
The prevalence of mental health problems among youth with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is significantly higher than that among youth without ADHD. The study also seeks to investigate whether internalizing and externalizing problems are associated with cigarette use and initiation age of regular use among adolescents. Furthermore, the study also examines the extent to which cigarettes can cause physical and psychological health problems.
The evidence suggests that there is an association between internalizing problems and cigarette usage among youth among the US. Further research is needed to fully understand this relationship.

Excerpt from the Book
INTRODUCTION
The link between e-cigarette smoking and mental health disorders among youth in the United States (US) is a topic of concern. Several studies have found significant associations between adolescent smoking and mental health problems (Lewis et al., 2011; Riehm et al., 2019; Conway et al., 2018). These mental health problems include internalizing and externalizing problems, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and ADHD (Riehm et al., 2019; Conway et al., 2018; Goldenson et al., 2018). Additionally, research has shown that sexual minorities may be at greater risk of stress-related substance use behaviors and mental health disorders, including smoking, due to discrimination related to their sexual minority status (McCabe et al., 2017). The use of e-cigarettes by adolescents has been associated with an increased risk of future cigarette smoking initiation (Watkins et al., 2018; Friedman & Xu, 2020). Furthermore, e-cigarette use has been found to be associated with increased psychological distress among youth (Cambron, 2022). It is important to consider the behavioral consequences and long-term adverse health effects of youth smoking, as well as the potential impact of e-cigarette use on mental health outcomes among youth.
