In this term paper, I will discuss the effect of the constantly increasing screen-time on the empathy of children and adolescence furthermore to what extent there is a possibility of resulting problems with forming relationships due to the lack of empathy induced by the steadily increasing screen-time. In this term paper, I will talk about children referring to individuals from the age of three to thirteen and adolescents from thirteen to eighteen years old.
Digitalization has an enormous impact on today's societies and plays a significant role for many purposes such as entertainment, education, information, healthcare, and most importantly in communication. Digital innovations and development, especially in the field of socio-technology, brought a change in interpersonal communication and relationships.
First, I will begin with the declaration of the concept of empathy and its origin in section two. Following I will head deeper into the fundamental parts of social development to generate a solid base for the second aspect talked about which is the formation of interpersonal relationships. The next topic I will address in section three concerning the role of devices in the daily routine of a child or adolescents in times of social media and gaming followed by the differentiation of the two major ideas of content and their impact on younger people. In section four I will analyze the connection between the topics addressed above. In the conclusion, I will answer the question whether there are effects of the usage of devices on the social behavior ensued by the lack of empathy.

Research Objectives and Core Themes
This academic paper explores the impact of increasing screen time on the empathetic development and social interaction skills of children and adolescents. It investigates whether the reliance on digital devices and the resulting decline in face-to-face interaction leads to a measurable loss of empathy and difficulties in maintaining stable interpersonal relationships.
- The psychological definition and origin of empathy across the lifespan.
- The relationship between empathy and the formation of social bonds.
- Statistical trends in daily screen time among young people from 2012 to 2020.
- Differential effects of passive media consumption versus active social interaction.
- The long-term consequences of digital media usage on mental health and social behavior.
Excerpt from the Book
2.4. Empathy as a Foundation of Relationships
Forming a relationship without empathy proves to be impossible in the view of the fact that humans desire to be accompanied by people who they feel loved, respected and understood and who they admire. Since empathy enables an individual to interpret the feelings of others it also builds a place for reaction to another person's behavior which is more likely to be prosocial if empathy is used to acknowledge someone's affective state. In 2017 Peter Kardos conducted a study on the impact concerning the relationship between the level of empathic abilities and the number of social relationships. Eighty Americans were firstly tested on their empathy through a questionnaire and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index which was constructed by Davis in 1980 (qtd. in Kardos 7) and were secondly asked to list all their acquaintances they were in stable contact with. The study's results have shown that people with higher empathic abilities increase their number of maintained friendships compared to others with a lower empathy level (Kardos et. al. 5). People, in general, prefer a friendship with an empathic person over a connection with a highly apathetic person for the reason that one's friend should make one feel good and support one's comfort and feelings. Staying in contact with an apathetic person for most people requires more effort such as the consciousness of the lack of empathy and the potential to cope with that, hence a longer-lasting relationship is naturally easier to maintain with a person possessing high empathic abilities.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fundamental research question of this study?
The study investigates to what extent the steady increase in daily screen time among children and adolescents leads to a decrease in their ability to form meaningful relationships due to an induced lack of empathy.
Which demographic groups are the primary focus of the paper?
The research focuses on children (ages 3 to 13) and adolescents (ages 13 to 18).
What scientific methods were employed?
The paper utilizes a literature-based analytical approach, reviewing psychological theories on empathy development and aggregating statistical data and external studies regarding media usage patterns.
How is "screen time" categorized in this research?
Screen time is differentiated into passive consumption (e.g., watching videos or shows) and active involvement (e.g., social media communication, gaming, and online research).
What are the primary social impacts identified?
The paper suggests that excessive digital media usage replaces face-to-face social interactions, which are crucial for practicing and developing empathic skills.
What is the role of prosocial versus antisocial content?
Prosocial content in media can enhance empathy and support social bonds, whereas exposure to antisocial content and violence is linked to negative social behaviors in young users.
What is the significance of the 2017 study by Peter Kardos mentioned in the text?
It quantitatively demonstrates that individuals with higher empathic abilities maintain a larger number of stable friendships, reinforcing the bridge between empathy and social connectivity.
How does the author characterize the shift in communication of "digital natives"?
The author highlights that while younger generations are technologically proficient, they often lack a deep, internal understanding of how the technology works, functioning primarily as consumers rather than developers.
What recommendation does the author give regarding parental supervision?
The author advises that parents should actively monitor screen time and guide children toward prosocial content to minimize the risk of emotional underdevelopment.
