Excerpt from the Book

1. Introduction

The purpose of this academic report is to analyse selected elements of the Solutions Journalism Network's (SJN) website www.solutionsjournalism.org with their alternative approach to solutions-based reporting for the purpose of transformation toward equity, inclusion, and sustainability. Among other things, the SJN seeks to strengthen communities, promote equity, and build trust through their work to increase civic engagement.

The way in which the reporting is shaped, both conceptually and above all in terms of content, especially when it deals with other countries, cultures, (marginalized) communities or conflicts, has an effect not only on the well-being of the viewers, but primarily on the viewpoint that the audience, after absorbing and interpreting the information, internalizes and possibly even carries outwards and shares with others in public discourse. Journalistic contributions have a significant influence in shaping and directing the audience, which should not be underestimated, since, depending on the way the framework is set, it can evoke the same and affect the audience's opinion towards the world with all its aspects and how it ultimately "frames" its direct and indirect environment.

Our mass media (in Europe) largely report on problem-related events with a focus on their obstacles rather than possible approaches or solutions. However, some counter currents use "storytelling" in a way that changes the focus and puts the solution of the conflict in the focus, in order to serve as a model for similar conflicts or to show the audience that alongside states of emergency there are at least as many peaceful facts.
