Empirical studies have shown that the rapid growth and development of the Macau economy did not only improve the standard of living of the local citizens, but also brought a change in their consumption behavior leading to a high level of solid wastes generation. With a limited land resource and growing population, the government of Macau and local waste management companies are currently faced with the challenge of managing the growing volume of solid wastes generated by the local population. It is therefore the focus of this study to identify and examine the barriers to effective solid waste management in Macau.

THE PRACTICE OF WASTE MANAGEMENT IN MACAU

Waste management in Macau is the process of collection, storage, transportation and incineration of the wastes generated by the the teritory. The companies CSR and CGS are responsible for different aspects of waste management in Macau. While CSR is responsible for street cleaning, garbage collection and transportation, CGS caters for the operation of the garbage incinerator.

Since the objective of this paper is draw policy conclusions, chemical characterization of toxic substances discharged as a result of incineration is not within the scope of this research. The major challenge that has been raised in the operation of the MIRP is the generation of fly ash and slag considered harmful to public health and environmental quality.
