This study explores the influence of technological innovation on the performance of telecom firms, with a focus on the mediating role of creative behavior and the moderating role of government policies supporting innovation. Data was collected from 326 employees in managerial and operational roles across telecom firms in Pakistan, using a convenience sampling method. Quantitative analysis was performed with SPSS and Smart PLS software.

Findings indicate that technological innovation significantly enhances telecom firms' performance. While creative behavior serves as a mediator, its impact is less pronounced. Contrary to expectations, government policies supporting innovation do not exhibit a moderating effect on the relationship between technological innovation and firm performance.

This research provides actionable insights for policymakers and telecom regulators to review and refine innovation policies, addressing their current ineffectiveness. The novel exploration of creative behavior as a mediating factor enriches the existing literature on innovation in the telecom sector. Limitations include the focus on a subset of telecom firms in Pakistan and the use of cross-sectional data.

The study offers practical implications for policy and decision-makers in fostering technological advancements, while contributing to theoretical understanding of innovation's role in enhancing firm performance in the digital age.

Excerpt from the Book

1.1.Background

Vital role of the telecommunications (telecom) industry for a country cannot be underestimated. Telecom industry supports progress of economy and also acts as a critical platform for long-term development by giving novel solutions to concerns regarding environment and social structure (Wickramasinghe, 2023). Access to telecom service is deeply linked with human rights, empowerment of people to exercise their liberties, development of education, and fueling socio-economic development. Ubiquitous connectivity is vital for reduction of the digital divide, safeguarding equivalent opportunities for people across geographical, socioeconomic, and cultural boundaries.

Policymakers, government officials, and stakeholders should work collectively for development of strategies that encourage inexpensive and accessible telecom infrastructure, capitalize in programs for digital literacy, and resolve inequalities in connectivity (Fobosi, 2024). A study, while focusing on USA and Africa, found that these areas struggle for ubiquitous access, promoting innovation, and formulating regulatory frameworks for achieving fine balance between supporting market forces and safeguarding customer interest.

Filling up the digital accessibility differential between different segments of the society, guaranteeing high quality telecom services, and adopting state of the art technologies can be the combined challenges that underpin the deeply associated world of digital connectivity (Ezeigweneme, Umoh, Ilojianya, & Adegbite, 2024). In the contemporary digital age, availability of telecom services is becoming increasingly vital for persons to exercise their basic human rights (Rydzak, 2018). The telecom sector can be considered as a sector for general well-being of humanity. Major contributions have been made by telecom sector for growth of developed countries and has effectively enhanced the business-friendly environment as well (Inegbedion & Obadiaru, 2019).
