Objectives and Core Topics

This paper examines the evolution of work-life balance (WLB) movements in Germany and evaluates how organizations, specifically BMW, implement WLB policies to support employee well-being while fostering corporate success. The core objective is to analyze how professional management of WLB programs creates a win-win scenario for both the organization and its workforce.

  • The significance of leisure and its impact on individual health and stress management.
  • Current status of work-life balance and labor market trends in Germany.
  • Corporate implementation of family-friendly policies using BMW as a primary case study.
  • Strategic management of WLB and its influence on organizational productivity.
  • The role of line managers and coaching in the effective delivery of WLB initiatives.

Excerpt from the Book

4.2 Win-win situation

“It is the employees who make up the company and thus represent the distinguishing factor of its success” (BMW Group, 2002, p. 2). Thus, it is obvious that BMW is not only interested in its employees’ private well-being, but also their well-being at work because only those employees who are satisfied with their job can work effectively (BMW Group, 2008). Employees of BMW must be enthusiastic and motivated to guarantee the organisation’s sustained success and, “in turn, the company offers exceptional working conditions and social benefits in accordance with the principle of give and take” (BMW Group, 2002, p. 2).These words clearly demonstrate that BMW provides a WLB programme in order to benefit from it. The company acts according to the give-and-take basis resulting in a win-win situation illustrated in Figure 5. On the one hand, employees benefit from flexible time management due to more time sovereignty as well as job security and regular income; on the other hand, BMW can increase its production capacity and react quickly to fluctuations.
