Over 1.5 million people are currently being held in correctional facilities across the United States, a number that has increased by more than 400 percent since 1978. It has been proved that inmates who are suffering from mental illness do not receive the essential medical attention inside of jails. Because of this, violent crimes such as rape will still be a serious problem even after the perpetrators of these crimes are released from prison. As a result, changes are essential to ensure the continued success of the judicial system.
