This research project investigates the challenges and economic ramifications of urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) within the scope of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus. As a microcosm of urban development, the KNUST campus provides a unique setting to explore the intricate dynamics of UPA in an educational institution. The study identifies and analyzes the challenges that KNUST's UPA initiatives encounter, including soil quality, water resources management, regulatory barriers, and resource allocation within a confined urban environment.
The study was conducted between 18th July 2023 and 24th September, a total of 6 respondents were interviewed across six farms, five of which were situated in Brunei-KNUST campus and one situated at Ayiduase. In assessing the economic impact of UPA at KNUST, we employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative insights. The case study of KNUST's UPA initiatives serves as a valuable example for other urban and peri-urban areas facing similar challenges and opportunities. By sharing lessons learned and best practices, this research aims to inform decision-makers, campus administrators, and local stakeholders about the potential of UPA to drive sustainable urban development and improve the economic well-being of the community.

Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION: This chapter sets the stage for the research project by providing background information on urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA). It clearly defines the problem statement, highlighting the need to understand the challenges and economic impacts of UPA, specifically within the context of the KNUST campus. The significance of the study is emphasized, outlining its potential contributions to sustainable urban development and community well-being. The main and specific objectives are articulated, providing a clear roadmap for the research. Finally, the scope of the study and its justifications are presented, providing context and limiting the research to the KNUST campus to allow for a detailed case study analysis.
CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW: This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of existing literature on urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA). It begins by defining UPA and then explores its historical development and current trends globally, with specific attention to the United States, Europe, China/Asia, and Ghana/Africa. This section likely presents diverse models and approaches to UPA across different geographical contexts and socio-economic settings. The chapter further delves into the benefits and challenges associated with UPA, outlining both its potential for sustainable development and the obstacles it faces, such as resource limitations and regulatory hurdles. Finally, a review of existing research on the economic impact of UPA lays the groundwork for the empirical analysis conducted in later chapters.
CHAPTER THREE: STUDY AREA AND METHODOLOGY: This chapter describes the study area, the KNUST campus, detailing its characteristics relevant to UPA. It likely categorizes different farming practices, such as crop farming, animal agriculture (both commercial and non-commercial), and identifies the profiles of farmers involved. Specific locations on campus are identified, distinguishing between urban and peri-urban agricultural practices (Brunei area and Ayiduase rabbit farm). The chapter then outlines the data collection methods employed in the research and explains how the collected data will be analyzed, specifying the mixed-methods approach (qualitative and quantitative). The chapter concludes by stating the expected outputs of the research and any limitations encountered during the data collection and analysis process.
CHAPTER FOUR: RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: This chapter presents the findings of the research, likely analyzing data from each of the six farms studied (five in Brunei and one in Ayiduase). Each farm's unique characteristics and production are detailed. The chapter then synthesizes these individual findings to provide an overall interpretation of the results, analyzing the economic impact of UPA on the KNUST campus. This is where the key findings regarding challenges and economic benefits are presented and discussed. The discussion section likely connects the findings back to the literature review, exploring the implications of the research for policy and practice in the context of sustainable urban development.
