How did East Germany exploit John F. Kennedy’s assassination for propaganda purposes? This thesis examines the reactions of the socialist leadership to the 1963 assassination and reveals how the regime used the crisis to portray capitalism as unstable. Based on extensive archival research and primary sources such as Stasi documents and articles from Neues Deutschland, the study analyzes both the official propaganda and the actual sentiments of the East German population. This book provides valuable insights into the DDR’s media strategies, Cold War dynamics, and the mechanisms of authoritarian rule. A must-read for historians, political scientists, and anyone interested in the geopolitical tensions of the 20th century.

Excerpt from the Book

a. The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy

On November 22, 1963, Dallas, Texas, became the focal point of one of the most pivotal and tragic events in American history: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This detailed account aims to unravel the complexity of the events that unfolded on that fateful day. Kennedy’s visit to Texas was part of a larger political strategy aimed at consolidating support within the Democratic Party with regard to the upcoming Presidential elections the year following (Warren et al. 28-29; Knight 1). The itinerary for the trip included multiple stops across Texas, including a final stop in Dallas that was supposed to be a central event designed to maximize public engagement and visibility (Warren et al. 2; Dallek 642–644).

Despite multiple intelligence warnings, the Secret Service faced criticism for inadequate security preparations for Kennedy’s visit to Dallas. Challenges in effectively translating these warnings contributed to the failure to address potential threats (Dallek 644). The atmosphere in Dallas, marked by conservative sentiments and local tensions, heightened the risk of extremist activities against Kennedy (Dallek 642–644). His support for civil rights legislation alienated many in the South, further complicating the political landscape. Additionally, the media environment in Dallas often criticized Kennedy, which likely contributed to radical attitudes (Dallek 645). Ultimately, these factors, combined with insufficient security measures, created a volatile atmosphere that led to his assassination, highlighting significant failures in security response.
