Resumen Extracto de texto Detalles

The paper analyzes the growing gap between the rich and the poor in New York City, examining both historical developments and the city's spatial structure. It also looks at population trends and the division of society into different social classes – the upper class, middle class, and lower class – highlighting key issues such as gentrification, homelessness, and crime.

The author investigates the causes of these social disparities and their impact on urban life. Rising living costs, housing shortages, and unequal economic opportunities have led to an increasing divide between wealthy and poor residents. Additionally, the paper discusses government measures and aid programs aimed at addressing these social problems.

Drawing from various sources, the paper concludes with a critical reflection on how this social divide might evolve in the future.

Objectives and Key Themes

The primary objective of this work is to analyze the historical development and current state of social disparity in New York City, investigating the widening divide between the affluent and the impoverished populations. The central research question explores how this social stratification originated, how it manifests in the contemporary urban environment, and what impacts this exclusion has on the quality of life within the metropolis.

  • Historical evolution of New York City from its colonial founding to the present.
  • Spatial and demographic analysis of the city's five boroughs.
  • Examination of class structures, specifically the upper class, middle class, and underclass.
  • Challenges of urban living, including housing affordability, poverty, and marginalization.
  • Evaluation of government interventions and social aid programs in response to social inequality.

Excerpt from the Book

Upper class:

The upper class lives either in the affluent Manhattan district of the Upper East Side or beyond the city limits. The Upper East Side is regarded as one of the most prestigious and wealthy neighborhoods in NY, primarily populated by whites and Asians. The highly educated and high earning five percent of the population is increasingly pushing social and ethnic diversity off the island. Through the modernization of low-income districts, the upper class is steadily taking over the poorer neighborhoods. The Williamsburg district serves as an example. Many artists lived there in the run-down neighborhood because of the cheap rents. Shortly afterwards, students moved into the neighbourhood and modernization began, the residents were given notice, the buildings were renovated, rents were drastically increased and the higher-income population occupied the neighbourhood.
