This paper explores the role of Social and Emotional Learning in German and American education systems, highlighting its importance for students’ well-being, academic success, and personal development. Based on a survey conducted by the author with over 300 participants from both countries, the study compares how SEL is implemented in schools, examines key differences, and presents students’ personal experiences and suggestions for improvement. The findings offer valuable insights into how education systems can better prepare students for life beyond the classroom.

Research Goal and Thematic Focus
This paper examines the role of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in the German and American educational systems, aiming to identify how these systems prepare students for future challenges through targeted social and emotional development. The research investigates the current implementation status of SEL, highlights differences in pedagogical approaches, and assesses student perceptions regarding the effectiveness of existing support structures.
- Theoretical foundations of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and its relevance to modern professional life.
- Comparative analysis of SEL implementation in German and American high schools.
- Evaluation of the impact of SEL on student academic performance and mental health.
- Identification of strengths and weaknesses in current school-based support systems.
- Assessment of student needs regarding psychological support and emotional guidance.
Excerpt from the Book
The importance of SEL for work life
Research in neuroscience and education reveals the positive effect of great social and emotional skills on all parts of our lives, which also includes work life. When applying for a job, the employer requires several skills from the applicant that are known as hard skills and soft skills.
Hard skills include competences that are usually specific to a particular job. That knowledge is directly taught at school and can be measured through qualifications such as a university degree or certificates.
Soft skills can be promoted at school through SEL. They are difficult to quantify but essential for success in a wide range of industries and professions. Soft skills are characteristics that enable the individual to successfully work in a social environment. Those characteristics obtain among others leadership, teamwork, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and social skills.
While hard skills have always played a key role in job applications, the importance of soft skills has majorly increased over the past years. In the US labour market, jobs that put immense value on the ability to socialize properly have increased by nearly 12 percent between 1980 and 2012, while occupations that require fewer social skills have decreased by 3.3 percent.
