Summary Details

[Englisch: The English naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was not only fascinated by the natural beauty of the islands in the Pacific during his voyage around the world, but he also developed a theory of geological atoll formation that is still convincing today (and it is a theory of oceanic reef formation in general). Atolls are reefs, i.e., islands made up of dead corals, which have a lagoon in their center. The British geologist Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875) influenced Darwin's perception of the islands and their formation. Sir C. Lyell's book "The Principles of Geology" was also in the library on board the HMS Beagle during its exploration and cartographical mapping voyage around the world. Darwin's volcanic theory (i.e., that volcanoes formed in the sea are responsible for reef and atoll formation) was supplemented in the 20th century by the theory of the Austrian marine researcher Dr. Hans Hass (1919-2013), who believed that the lagoon of the atolls is formed by the death of corals in poor underwater conditions.]
