Zellbiologie 1838-1902. Theodor Schwann und Rudolf Virchow. Die Entdeckung der Körperzelle als Baustein menschlichen Lebens

Summary Details

It was a long journey, from the assumption that plants are made up of their body cells to the discovery that this applies equally to animals and plants (T. Schwann, 1839). The commonality for all organisms now lay in the cellular formation of the organisms through their "forming power." However, it was still not investigated whether the cell nucleus develops from the undifferentiated cytoplasm (Schwann's theory). The discovery of nuclear division (according to the statement: "Omnis nucleus e nucleo") in cell division preceded the discovery of chromosomes as the physical location of hereditary material (discovery of genes as physical carriers of genetic material, circa 1902 by Boveri and Sutton). The microscopic observation of cell division was a discovery that led to increasingly useful results for disease control in general, e.g., in the treatment of cancer.
