Extract from the Book

The Great Delusion from John Mearsheimer

The non-fiction book The Great Delusion was published first in 2018 by Yale University Press. In this book John J. Mearsheimer, a famous realist in International Politics, wrote about the problem the liberal approach nowadays has to face in International Politics.

The main motivation behind his work was primarily that the scholar wanted to find out what was the cause of the failing US foreign policy after the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s. He wanted to find out literally “what went wrong” (p. vii). Another motivation for writing the book was in particular that Mearsheimer wanted to examine the relationships between the three ism more accurately. To be exact, he meant Liberalism, Realism and Nationalism as the three major approaches. He meant it as his three major approaches. During analyzing the failure in US foreign policy Mearsheimer came to the conclusion that both of these goals “fit together rather nearly” (p. vii).
