Die Vergabe von sportlichen Mega-Events geschah seit Beginn der 2000er Jahre vermehrt an sogenannte Schwellenländer. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es die Auswirkungen der Ausrichtung von Mega-Events, konkret der FIFA Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft, der Olympischen Spiele, der UEFA Fußball-Europameisterschaft und des ICC Cricket World Cup, in Schwellenländern auf die Demokratie zu untersuchen. Hierfür wurden elf Fälle im Zeitraum von 2008 bis 2023 untersucht. Unter Verwendung von Daten des V-Dem Instituts der Universität Göteborg wurden der Stand der Demokratie zum Zeitpunkt der Vergabe des Events mit dem Stand ein Jahr nach dem Mega-Event verglichen. Die statistisch signifikanten Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich die Demokratie in Schwellenländern durch die Veranstaltung eines Mega-Events und dem damit einhergehenden globalen Medieninteresse nicht verbessert, während gleichzeitig mehr Korruption zu verzeichnen ist.
Since the early 2000s, mega sporting events have increasingly been awarded to so-called newly industrialized countries. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of hosting mega-events, specifically the FIFA Men's World Cup, the Olympic Games, the UEFA European Football Championship and the Cricket World Cup, in emerging countries on democracy. For this purpose, eleven cases were examined in the period from 2008 to 2023. Using data from the V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg, the state of democracy at the time of awarding the event was compared with the state of democracy one year after the mega-event. The significant results show that democracy in emerging countries does not improve as a result of hosting a mega-event and the associated global media interest, while at the same time higher corruption levels are observed.
