Background: Why China Turned to Mega Solar Projects
Over the past few decades, China has experienced rapid industrial growth and urban expansion. Factories, high-speed rail networks, technology hubs and growing cities have all required enormous amounts of electricity. As the country became known as the “world’s factory,” its energy demand increased at an unprecedented rate. For many years, this demand was mainly met by coal which was cheap and widely available. However, relying heavily on coal created serious long-term problems.
In order to meet climate goals, China is slowing its economy through ‘New Productive Forces’ while securing energy independence. However, one of the biggest challenges was environmental. Major cities struggled with severe air pollution which affected public health and lowering the quality of life. Thick smog became a symbol of the environmental cost of rapid development. At the same time, China’s carbon emissions rose sharply while making it one of the largest contributors to global greenhouse gases. With increasing international pressure and growing domestic concern about climate change, it became clear that the old energy model was no longer sustainable.
In response, the Chinese government made strong commitments to shift toward renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. It announced long-term goals to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060 (IEA, 2024). To meet these ambitious targets while still supporting economic growth, China needed energy solutions that were both large in scale and clean in nature. Mega solar projects emerged as a practical answer.
