Summary Details

Leo Tolstoy's short story "God Sees the Truth, But Waits" (1872) tells the heartbreaking tale of a man who spends twenty-six years in a Siberian prison for a murder he did not commit. This paper argues that Tolstoy uses this story to explore a profound question: how can a person endure unbearable suffering and still find meaning? The answer, Tolstoy suggests, lies not in receiving justice from other humans, but in finding peace through faith and forgiveness. The story shows that human justice is flawed and often fails the innocent. Yet the protagonist, Ivan Aksionov, eventually discovers that true freedom comes not from being released from prison, but from letting go of anger and forgiving the man who destroyed his life. Through simple but powerful storytelling, Tolstoy teaches that while God sees the truth, He waits not to punish, but to allow humans the time to find forgiveness in their own hearts.
