Resumen Detalles

This paper tries to analyze Bertolt Brecht’s "Mother Courage and Her Children" (1939) within the framework of new humanism. The paper argues that this play is a powerful study of human dignity, moral choice, and the destructive nature of war on the human spirit. Although many readings of the play center on Brecht’s Marxist critique of capitalism or his epic theater techniques, this analysis emphasizes the play’s engagement with new humanist principles: the affirmation of human worth, the importance of moral responsibility, the critique of dehumanizing systems, and the celebration of compassion and solidarity.

In the light of new humanism's theoretical constructs, especially its emphasis on human dignity, ethical choice, and the rejection of ideologies that objectify people, this study addresses three central questions: How does Brecht portray the struggle for human dignity in the face of war? What do Mother Courage’s moral compromises reveal about the dehumanizing effects of war? How then do characters like Kattrin come to embody the new humanist values of compassion and sacrifice? Textual analysis shows that Brecht depicts a world in which war commodifies human beings, forces impossible moral choices, and destroys community ties. But the play also proclaims the possibility of human goodness in acts of sacrifice and solidarity. The study concludes that Mother Courage is not just an anti-war play or a Marxist critique, but a new humanist meditation on the fragility and resilience of human dignity in times of crisis.
