Swine Production Practices, Challenges, and Prospects at Wolaita Sodo Agricultural College. Practical Training and Income Generation Perspective

Summary Details

Swine production is an emerging livestock enterprise in Ethiopia with strong potential for income generation, food security, and agricultural training. This study evaluates swine production practices, challenges, and prospects at Wolaita Sodo Agricultural College, focusing on its dual role in practical training and institutional income generation. A mixed-methods cross-sectional design was employed using survey data (n = 60), observational assessments, and institutional records. Data were analysed using SPSS (version 26), applying descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, correlation, and regression models. Results revealed that semi-intensive production systems dominate (72%), while feed shortage (85%), disease prevalence (67%), and market limitations (61%) are major constraints. Regression analysis showed that feeding (β = 0.45), health care (β = 0.38), and housing (β = 0.29) significantly influence income (R² = 0.55, p < 0.05). Swine production contributes substantially to institutional revenue through piglet and live animal sales. The study concludes that improving feed resources, veterinary services, and market integration can enhance sustainability and training effectiveness.
