"Union Street" begins with a rape. Kelly Brown is an eleven-year-old girl who is attacked by a stranger in a piece of waste ground and left bleeding in the cold. It is the prose of a writer who do not look away from the physical reality of violence, and Barker's honesty makes the scene pretty cold. The ground was hard frozen and the frost had transformed the grass into sharp little blades that cut into her face (Barker). This opening establishes the novel’s central concern: the vulnerability of women’s bodies in a world of poverty, male violence and social neglect. The following seven stories each revolve around a different female character young, old and in-between whose lives converge on the street of unnamed northern English town. Barker’s structure is not that of a conventional novel with a single protagonist but a composite portrait, a mosaic in which individual lives compose a larger picture of working-class womanhood. In this essay I argue that Union Street is a work of radical empathy, a book that demands the value of lives that wider culture dismisses. Barker does not offer solutions or political programs. She offers something rarer: the simple, devastating truth about what it is like to be poor, female and determined to survive.
