The idea of “self-emptying” of Christ in Philippians 2:5-11 is one of the controversial theological issues that have been widely debated by theologians. The major question being, what did Christ empty himself of? As such, the Christ hymn of Philippians 2:5-11 constitutes a foundational text for understanding the incarnation and the self-emptying (kenosis) of the Son of God. This essay provides a detailed exegetical analysis of the passage, focusing particularly on the meaning of morphē, harpagmos, and the verb ekenōsen. It argues that the nature of Christ’s kenosis is that of voluntary and functional renouncing of the independent exercise of divine prerogatives during the incarnation, rather than an ontological abandonment of his divine essence. Christ retained the fullness of deity while also assuming the form of a servant, hiding his glory and submitting to the limitations of genuine humanity for the purpose of redemptive obedience unto death. This essay also traces the poetic (hymnal) structure of the passage, and also engages with major historical and contemporary interpretations, concluding that kenosis reveals the character of divine love as self-giving service rather than grasping power.
