The modern economy is becoming increasingly digital, service oriented, and technology driven, yet its fundamental dependence on physical resources remains largely overlooked. This article examines why the primary sector, including agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, and energy, continues to function as a critical foundation of economic activity and an ultimate economic chokepoint. The article argues that food, energy, water, minerals, and other natural resources support not only traditional industries but also advanced sectors such as artificial intelligence, digital services, electric vehicles, and renewable energy. Evidence from the Food and Agriculture Organization, UN Trade and Development, the World Bank, and Nepal's National Statistics Office shows that primary-sector activities have wider economic, social, and strategic consequences than their direct contribution to output may suggest. FAO demonstrates that agri-food systems generate significant benefits while also creating substantial hidden economic, social, and environmental costs, highlighting the need for more resilient and sustainable transformation. UNCTAD further shows that economies heavily dependent on commodities are vulnerable to price and quantity shocks, making diversification and value addition important for long-term resilience. The article also highlights the growing physical requirements of the digital economy, particularly the energy and mineral needs of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies. From a Nepalese perspective, the discussion emphasizes agriculture, hydropower, natural resources, infrastructure, productivity, and diversification as important components of economic resilience. Overall, the article concludes that technological progress does not eliminate dependence on the primary sector, rather, it creates new forms of dependence on the physical resources that underpin modern economic systems. Securing the primary sector is therefore not a return to an old economic model but a necessary condition for building a resilient, technologically advanced, and sustainable economy.
