Objectives and Topics

The primary objective of this report is to analyze the shifting landscape of the investment banking industry following the 2007-2008 financial crisis, using Lazard and Citigroup as contrasting case studies to evaluate how different business models respond to increased regulation, market volatility, and global economic changes.

  • Regulatory impact and the necessity for greater transparency in banking.
  • The decline in traditional M&A revenues and the rise of mid-market activity.
  • Comparative strategic analysis of boutique firms versus large financial conglomerates.
  • The importance of human capital and emerging market expansion for future growth.
  • Impact of the financial crisis on Citigroup’s organizational structure and Lazard’s specialized focus.

Excerpt from the Book

Detailed analysis Lazard vs. Citi

Almost every criteria sets Citi and Lazard apart, Lazard is a non integrated specialized investment advisor contrary to Citi which is a financial behemoth offering a full range of investment banking services. Lazard minimizes activities that require putting capital at risk, including trading, underwriting, and merchant banking. Instead, it concentrates on M&A, with a sideline in investment management. This approach is at once ultraconservative and boldly contrarian, in that Lazard is proposing to live off advisory fees in an investment banking industry that makes most of its money wielding massive sums of capital for the house account.

Lazard is highly specialized in terms of geographic zones covered focusing mainly on North America and Western Europe whereas Citi is present everywhere. Citi still holds a strong position in America where it originates but has identified expansion opportunities in emerging markets and currently focuses its strategy on these opportunities: Citi is strengthening its position in Asia and Latin America whereas many other investment banks have decided that those markets were becoming too risky.
