Resumen Extracto de texto Detalles

In the United Kingdom there are mainly two types of newspapers, namely the Quality Papers and the Tabloids. The question is in how far these two types of newspapers differ from each other, if they differ at all, and what the differences are, if any. How are Tabloids and Quality Papers defined and do they only differ in appearance or in content, too? To answer all these questions it is important to first give a definition of both newspapers and then to compare a typical Tabloid with a typical Quality Paper to make these distinctions obvious. To come to a clear conclusion it is important to focus on main aspects such as layout, language and reliability or seriousness.

Objectives and Core Themes

The primary objective of this research is to investigate the structural, linguistic, and qualitative differences between British Quality Papers and Tabloids. By analyzing two distinct articles reporting on the same schoolhouse shooting event in an Amish community, the study examines how each newspaper type shapes public perception through its specific editorial approach, layout choices, and reporting reliability.

  • Comparison of editorial characteristics between Quality Papers and Tabloids.
  • Analysis of linguistic styles, including vocabulary range and sentence complexity.
  • Evaluation of layout and visual elements as narrative tools.
  • Assessment of journalistic reliability, source transparency, and objectivity.
  • Impact of subjective reporting versus factual presentation on reader opinion.

Excerpt from the Book

3.2.2 Language

The language of The Guardian is very formal and neutral and the content is also very informative. The introductory part on the front page gives the reader information about what happened, about who shot, where it happened, when it happened, how many people were injured or killed and what the reasons for the offence were. The language is very precise with no embellishments or unimportant facts:

“A 32-year-old truck driver walked into a one-room Amish school in Pennsylvania yesterday, took more than a dozen pupils hostage, and shot dead at least four students before turning the gun on himself.”24

This first sentence is very precise because it gives the reader some very important information:

The offender was a 32-year-old male whose profession is truck driver

The Amish school was in Pennsylvania and it was a one-room school

The offender took the pupils hostage before shooting them

He shot at least four people dead

He shot himself

This first sentence includes much information which is very neutral because it includes no subjective words or evaluations. Also the formulation “turning the gun on himself”25 is more neutral than formulations such as “killed himself” or “shot himself dead”.
