Second, contemporary discriminatory policies and factors have also led to the ethnic war in Sri Lanka. There have been also external social factors that punished the Sri Lankan conflict further. The main motif with a lion holding a word in its paws represents the Sinhalese ethnic majority; the yellow stripe represents the Tamils; and the green stripe the Muslims (De Silva, 1993, p.261). One can ask oneself how many countries have national flags in which the emblems representing the minorities are kept apart from the ethnic majority. The British colonial legacy has certainly sewed the grassroots for ethnic discrimination and tension between the Sinhala majority and Tamil minority in Sri Lanka. Yet, the Sri Lankan ethnic war only became an effervescent issue because of contemporary political decisions and legislative policy-making.
