Excerpt from the Book

3.1.1 Social changes caused by television from 1945 to 1960

When television entered the society of the United States as the new mass medium after 1945, it exerted profound influence on it and entailed many social changes. The immense influence it had on the American society can be seen in the nationwide rapid increase of television sets during 1945 to 1960. But television implicated more changes among the American society. In contrast to radio, television is a predominantly domestic medium. When it became the leading mass medium in the United States after 1945, people started staying at home more often as they wanted to watch TV (Bradley). Over the course of time, the number of hours spent in front of the television per day steadily increased, as people enjoyed the new opportunity of watching films and series at home together with their families without having to pay any entrance fees (Bradley). Consequently, people started neglecting their outdoor activities and preferred staying at home, a process which got even worse over the years. However, the American audience was not only influenced on a physical level and therewith changed its behavior in this way, but it was influenced on a psychological level as well. People accepted what was said and shown on television and began orientating themselves to it. The conditions portrayed on television were even “accepted as normal. The ideal family, the ideal schools and neighborhoods, the world, were all seen in a way which had only partial basis in reality” (Bradley). These circumstances made the audience become even more attracted to television, as they could escape their sorrows and problems and retreat into the ideal world of television series.
