Research Objectives and Core Themes

This study explores the generic structure and the functional use of metadiscourse in book reviews, specifically analyzing two reviews of Nassim Nicholas Taleb's "Antifragile" to understand how authors navigate their relationship with the reader.

  • Generic structure analysis of academic and non-academic book reviews.
  • Application of Motta-Roth’s (1998) model for book review move-analysis.
  • Classification of metadiscourse devices based on Hyland's (2008) framework.
  • Comparative analysis of linguistic choices and interactional strategies in digital versus print media reviews.

Excerpt from the Book

Analysis and comparison of the reviews' structures

I start by describing similarities and parallels that I have identified. Both reviews have a closing paragraph that functions as a final evaluation of Antifragile. It sums up the assessments that have been made earlier in the text, rounds the whole reviews up and states a recommendation whether to read or not to read the book. This section appears in a separate paragraph and is the last part of the text. Therefore it closely resembles the model of a book review's generic structure which has been described earlier in this paper. As a consequence I assume that the closing evaluation is a vital part of each book review. Since a lot of the persons who read a book review have not yet decided whether to buy or not to buy the specific book, the final recommendation is likely to be the most interesting part for them.

Another similarity is that both reviews lack some of the sub-functions described by Motta-Roth (1998). The sub-categories 4 (making topic generalizations) and 5 (inserting the book in the field) have been omitted in both cases. I can only speculate about the reasons for not including these pieces of information. Since both functions are concerned with relating the reviewed book to a broader topic or other important books, they are more likely to apply to academic books. These often operate within a larger field of research, whereas Antifragile does not easily fit into a specific category or field. It deals with a phenomenon discovered by its author which has hardly been discussed in a broader context. This also explains why the reviews' authors have only vaguely adressed a potential readership - it is not easy to define one.

Summary of Chapters

Introduction: Provides the motivation for analyzing the book review genre and defines the primary research questions regarding generic structure and metadiscourse.

Methods of analysis: Outlines the theoretical models used, specifically Motta-Roth’s move-structure and Hyland’s classification of metadiscourse.

Data set: Details the selection criteria for the two specific reviews of "Antifragile" chosen for the study.

Structure analysis of the sample reviews: Presents a detailed breakdown of the two reviews according to established rhetorical moves and sub-functions.

Comparison of the reviews' structures: Contrasts the rhetorical progression of both texts and identifies deviations from the standard generic model.

Classification of metadiscourse devices: Lists the specific linguistic features found in both texts and categorizes them into interactive and interactional dimensions.

Comparison of the role of metadiscourse devices: Explores how the authors' distinct media contexts influence their use of metadiscourse to shape reader perception.

Conclusion: Synthesizes findings, confirming that the argumentative style and the use of metadiscourse are deeply interconnected in the analyzed book reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary focus of this research paper?

The paper examines the generic structure of book reviews and investigates how metadiscourse devices are employed to negotiate the relationship between the author and the reader.

Which specific framework is used to analyze the structure of the reviews?

The study utilizes the four-stage model for book reviews developed by Motta-Roth (1998).

How are metadiscourse devices categorized in this study?

The analysis follows Hyland’s (2008) classification, dividing devices into two main dimensions: the interactive dimension (guiding the reader) and the interactional dimension (involving the reader).

What were the criteria for selecting the two reviews?

The reviews were chosen based on the book 'Antifragile' by Nassim Nicholas Taleb; one review was sourced from a major newspaper (The Guardian) and the other from a weblog, providing a contrast in writing styles.

What is the main finding regarding the generic structure of the reviewed texts?

While both reviews largely follow a standard structure, they exhibit variations, particularly in how they integrate evaluation and whether they include specific academic conventions like contextualizing the book in a wider field.

Which metadiscourse devices were most frequent in the samples?

The study identifies frequent use of transition markers and frame markers, which serve to organize the argument and help the reader navigate the text.

How does the choice of media (newspaper vs. weblog) influence the author's tone?

The newspaper review tends towards a more formal, objective style, whereas the weblog review uses more personal, interactional language, including frequent direct addresses to the reader.

Why did the author conclude that weblog writing might require more metadiscourse?

The analysis suggests that because the weblog author attempts a more persuasive and informal approach to win over the reader, they employ more engagement markers and boosters to reinforce their subjective arguments.
