This paper deals with David Malouf's (Australian) novel "The Conversations at Curlow Creek" and particularly with his treatment of spirituality. The term paper begins with an introduction followed by a discussion of the notion 'spirituality', which can be considered in a religious and in a non-religious context. After the definition and discussion of the phenomena 'spirit' and 'spirituality' the paper analyses how David Malouf treats these phenomena, particularly spirituality, in his novel "The Conversations at Curlow Creek" with particular reference to three passages which exemplify his treatment of spirituality. Indeed, spirituality is a recurrent theme in this novel and therefore this paper discusses spirituality in a religious and non-religious sense as well as the spiritual link between the protagonists.
The Conversations at Curlow Creek" behandelt.

Excerpt from the Book

Malouf’s Treatment of ‘Spirituality’ in The Conversations at Curlow Creek

During the reading of Conversations it becomes evident that there are many references to spirituality, soul and spirit in a religious context as well as beyond religion. The topic of this Australian novel, which deals with sin, forgiveness and death, is as such linked to spirituality and religion. In addition to that, spirituality is also constantly alluded to because of Adair’s ability of understanding other’s, their feelings and the relationships between people without words. It is striking that the word spirit is employed very often, but with different meanings some of which will be explained now.

After having visited the O’Riordans together with Fergus and Virgilia, Adair thinks about the family’s affection for Fergus and states that it disturbs Virgilia to realise ‘that it would not be another woman who would occupy his heart and keep his spirit always beyond her reach’31. In this context, spirit has a meaning that is similar to soul. Regarding Virgilia’s affection for Fergus, which she most probably wishes to be reciprocated, spirit in this sense also refers to Fergus’s love and affection. When visiting the family, Adair and Virgilia get to know a side of Fergus which was so far unknown to them32. Assuming that Virgilia strives after knowing everything about Fergus’s thoughts and feelings, this is most probably a rather unpleasant experience for her. Consequently, she is silent and, according to Adair, impressed33. After the encounter with the O’Riordans, Fergus was in a very good mood ‘which communicated itself to every part of him and from his spirit to theirs [Adair’s and Virgilia’s IM], and seemed to glow out of every aspect of the landscape’34. In this context spirit is used to refer to Fergus as a person, his mood and the aura of happiness that is around him and which also affects the others and seems to be reflected in the landscape.
