Research Objectives and Core Themes

This essay explores the narrative structure, context, and theological implications of the rape of Tamar as depicted in 2 Samuel 13:1-22, moving beyond a surface-level reading to examine the text's deeper focus on power dynamics and dynastic consequences within the house of David.

  • The narrative arc and structural composition of the Tamar-Amnon story.
  • The placement of the account within the broader context of the Succession Narrative.
  • The interplay between gender, power, and violence in the ancient Hebrew context.
  • The role of the victim's voice in an androcentric narrative tradition.

4. ANALYSIS

The story about Amnon and Tamar in 2 Sam 13:1-22 has a very clear narrative structure: 1-2 Exposition: 3-19 Main part: 4-5 Jon’adab and Amnon, 6-10 Amnon pretends to be ill, 11-14 conflict, 15-17 consequences, 18-19 Tamar was put out, 20-22 End: reactions of Absalom and David.

In the exposition the persons who are involved in the following story are introduced. They are not only named, but their relationship to each other is explained. So the reader gets to know that Absalom is a full brother of Tamar, that Absalom and Amnon are sons of David and that Amnon loves Tamar.

After this, one finds a large main part which includes the verses 3-19. This can be divided into several scenes.

In the scene 2 Sam 13:3-5 are 2 persons who interact with each other. The friend of Amnon, Jonadab, who, as a cousin of Amnon, is also a family member, is here introduced newly. One finds here a dialogue between the two men with direct speech. Jonadab asks Amnon why he feels that bad. After Amnon told him that he loves Tamar, Jonadab develops a plan how it might be possible to come near to her. The fact that the reader gets to know something about the feelings and the mind of the protagonists is very extraordinary in the Hebrew Bible for most of the narratives are more focused on the plot.

It provides the broader framework in which the actions of Amnon, Tamar, and Absalom are understood as consequences of David's own failures and moral compromises.
