Research Objectives and Themes

The primary objective of this paper is to provide a detailed literary interpretation of the poem "Marged" by the Welsh poet Gillian Clarke, specifically focusing on the thematic connection between the speaker and the former inhabitant of her home.

  • Exploration of the communication situation and inner monologue structure.
  • Formal analysis of the poem's structure, focusing on the blend of Shakespearean and Petrarchan sonnet elements.
  • Examination of poetic devices, including measure, rhythm, and rhetorical figures.
  • Analysis of the existential parallels drawn between the speaker's life and the deceased predecessor.

Excerpt from the Book

Concerning measure and rhythm, the poem is almost completely written in pentameters and iambs (e.g. l 3”over the old dark parlwr where she died”). Exceptions are in line 1 and 9, where there is an anapaest at the end (“lie in bed” and “(par)king the car”). Maybe these two exemptions once more reflect the two main characters in the poem. The only line with seven arses is line two (“falling asleep in the room I have made in the roof-space”). This overall patency reflects the quiet and easy syntax, as there are no exclamations or any other irregularities regarding punctuation marks. Even the question at the end does not irritate the reader heavily. All in all, this emphasizes again the impression of chain of thoughts.

Summary of Chapters

1. Overview of Content: The speaker, a woman living alone, describes her home and reflects on the life and death of the woman who lived there before her.

2. Analysis of the Communication Situation: This chapter highlights the use of an explicit speaker and the internal monologue style that emphasizes the character's sense of isolation.

3. Analysis of the Form: The section identifies the poem as a sonnet that mixes Shakespearean and Petrarchan elements, suggesting a complex relationship between the two female figures.

4. Measure and Rhythm: This part examines the metrical structure, noting how the use of iambs and pentameters reinforces the quiet, reflective nature of the speaker's thoughts.

5. Analysis of the Speech: The analysis focuses on how syntax and punctuation contribute to the "floating" feeling of the speaker's interior discourse.

6. Word Choice and Rhetorical Figures: This chapter explores specific Welsh terminology and rhetorical devices like anaphora and polyptoton to illustrate the ongoing comparison between the two lives.
