Excerpt from the Book

4. Reactions from the Right

Major social changes always garner reactions from the already existing society and its different groups, be it from different age groups, social groups, religious groups or political groups. This paper will focus mainly on the reactions from the right side of the political spectrum of British society.

The political right is commonly associated with qualities such as conservatism, xenophobia, racism, bigotry, prejudices and generally cautious behavior towards things which challenge their established tried and true worldview.

Perhaps the most famous spokesman for the right in the UK at that time was Enoch Powell, member of the Conservative Party and Member of Parliament (MP). At that time he was one of Britain’s most prolific politicians, known for his controversial views, anti-American attitude and speaking his mind on hot button issues: immigration, Britain’s role in the European Union, maintaining or releasing control of colonies overseas and so on. His infamous “Rivers of Blood” speech from 1968, delivered in Birmingham, sparked major debates concerning immigration as well as racism in the UK, which hasn’t truly subsided to this day. In his speech, which was never called “Rivers of Blood”, Powell speaks of the dangers of unchecked immigration and what the consequences will be for the country.
