Excerpt from the Book
3.1 CONCEPT OF PRIVATE SCHOOL
Private school which is referred to as non-state public school, independent school, as well as a school inhabited by people of high social status is a concept that has been defined from different perspective and by scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds. We should bear in mind that so many people have attempt to define it based on their foresight or perspective. However, it is pertinent to state from the onset that the concept of private school is important in the study of educational development of Nigeria, and nation building. Therefore, it is a very rich theme for research since education equals to development. In other words, the concept of private school cannot be fully discussed without first looking at its definitions as this forms the basis upon which the concept can be further understood.
Firstly, Oxford Advance Learner’s and Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English define private school as a school that is not supported by government money where the education must be paid by the parents of the children. This shows that private schools are not established by government but by individuals or variety of actors.
Secondly, Wikipedia the free encyclopedia see it as an independent school, which is not administered by local, state or national governments. The school retain the right to select the students and are funded in whole or in part by charging their students’ tuition, rather than relying on mandatory taxation through public, (government) funding. Thus, students can get scholarship into such schools, which makes the cost cheaper. However, in United Kingdom and several other Common Wealth Countries, the term is generally restricted to primary and secondary educational level. It is just recently that it is used for Universities.
