When the question is discussed whether a general ban should be placed on pornographic films and magazines, a central problem comes up. Before the arguments for and against pornography can be evaluated, pornography has to be defined. This is not nearly as simple as it seems to be. What are the criteria which indicate the differences between an artistic and a pornographic film or magazine?
In this discussion, it is assumed that those photos or scenes of films which have mainly the function to arouse sexual feelings are pornographic. Of course, this definition is not totally satisfactory, but it sufficiently describes which kinds of films and magazines are to be discussed here.

Excerpt from the Book
2. The Influence of pornography
An important argument in support of a general prohibition is that pornographic depictions exert negative influences. First and foremost people are afraid of negative influences on children. Some people claim that children or young persons who are often confronted with pornography could suffer behavioural disturbances and get an impression of sexuality which is neither realistic nor helps them to develop a positive attitude towards their own sexuality. Concerning this argument it is essential to realise that nowadays it is almost impossible to prevent children from watching TV. Therefore, many of them have direct access to pornography shown on TV. It is something different with pornographic magazines, since those ones are only allowed to be sold to adults.
Another way of looking at this aspect of pornography is to say that the showing of physical love cannot be something bad, since it is natural and furthermore a vital part of the relationship between women and men. So it could also be regarded as a part of real life which should not be made taboo. According to such an argumentation the fact that young persons become aware of sexuality is not totally negative, but rather enables them to understand that sexuality is something which belongs to and cannot be separated from life. Such a learning process is necessary for the children´s emotional development. However, it will not be thought advantageous, if young children watch `hard porns´. But the problem that the TV programme is not appropriate for children is not only caused by pornography, but also by too much violence shown on TV. Insofar it is no use imposing a ban on pornographic TV films, because there would still be a lot of displaying brutal murders and other forms of utmost violence. In my opinion this leads us to the most essential point in the discussion.
