Objectives and Topics

This work examines the central role of Heinrich Himmler in orchestrating the Holocaust and the subsequent exploitation of concentration camp prisoners for pseudo-scientific medical experimentation. It investigates how Himmler's organizational control over the SS and the camp system enabled systemic human rights abuses and the perversion of scientific ethics under the guise of Nazi objectives.

  • Heinrich Himmler’s influence on the structure and development of the Holocaust.
  • The expansion of the concentration camp system and the classification of prisoners.
  • The implementation and methodology of inhumane human experimentation at Dachau and Auschwitz.
  • The ethical failures of Nazi "scientists" and their disregard for human life.
  • Himmler’s ideological transformation of the SS and the "laws of selection."

Excerpt from the book

Dachau hypothermia research

The letter refers to experiments being conducted at Dachau on Himmler's direct orders. These experiments were of personal interest to Himmler, who want to learn the best way to save pilots from hypothermia after they had crash in to the North Sea (Berger 1435). The immersion-hypothermia study was carried out by Dr. Rascher at Dachau concentration camp between August 1942 and May 1943 (Berger 1435). The study used male camp prisoners, and exposed them to hypothermia, typically by submersion in cold water or by strapping the victim to a gurney and leaving them outside in the cold (Berger 1435). After freezing the victim, sometimes to the point of cardiac arrest, Rascher would then attempt to find the most effective way to rewarm them (Berger 1435). At times this was done by throwing the victim in boiling water (Berger 1435). "In some cases the responses of the hypothermic subjects were measured as they engaged in sexual intercourse with unwilling female subjects"(Pozos 437-61). Some victims were not warmed back up, rather these Nazi "scientist," I use the term loosely because no true science was conducted by these murderers, would time how long it took the victim to freeze to death in different situations (Berger 1435).
